Joe E. Pennel Jr.


Joe E. Pennel Jr., a retired United Methodist bishop, is professor of pastoral leadership at Vanderbilt Divinity School. From 1968–1996 he served as pastor of several churches in Memphis and Nashville. He was bishop of the Virginia Conference of the United Methodist Church from 1996–2004.

The author of 5 books, Joe is married to Janene Dunavant Pennel, and they have two grown daughters, Melanie and Heather. In his leisure time, he enjoys golf, hiking, gardening, reading, and collecting clocks.
