When I Am Afraid

By Nan Grantham

“When I am afraid, I put my trust in you.”
—Psalm 56:3, NRSV

I am alone in this house . . . in this car . . . in this situation. It’s never been quite like this before . . . what do I do?

My “most afraid” time thus far since my husband died: an encounter with a snake. Now I am surely the most fearful person of this creature that God put on the earth (I don’t even like to type the word). It was a pretty day outside. I had just let my new puppy out on the back patio when I heard an unusual growl-bark combination. I looked out and there on the patio was a coral snake. … read

Why shouldn’t God speak to us in the earth that surrounds us?
