PEACE During the Fourth Week of Advent

By Kara Lassen Oliver

Light the Christ candle, saying, We light the candle and recite the words of the Catholic Rosary prayer, based on Luke 1:28, 42: “Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with you! Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb, Jesus.”

Or you may pray the opening line from Mary’s Song of Praise in Luke 1:46: “My soul magnifies the Lord, and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior.”

Invite the music leader to help the group sing a song. Bring a picture of the Virgin Mary. Invite the group

simply to gaze at the image in silence, imagining this young woman’s calling and obedience to serve as the God-bearer for the Son of God. After several minutes, invite each person to name aloud an adjective that describes Mary. Then close with this prayer:

God of our Salvation, enable us to trust as Mary did, to hear the word of peace in the face of our fears, and to give our lives over to you in joyful obedience. Amen.
